The Geography Of The Philippines

Friday, August 13th, 2010

One finds interesting things to do with the geography of the Philippines.  People have fond ways and means to do business, earn a living and travel with the unique land formations and the rolling mountains, hills and valleys that characterize this tropical archipelago of Southeast Asia. The map shows different terrains, forests, farms, plains, plateaus and fields that are favorable for fun activities, crops and human habitat.  A further look at the topography of the Philippines makes people immediately marvel at the more than seven thousand islands that comprise this country.  With a land area consisting of 115,831 square miles, the Philippines has become the cultural center point for barter and trade during the early years and even during recent times.  It has also become the place where US bases once dwelled because it is a strategic military location during times of war.

Mountains, hills, volcanoes, and plateaus are the most noticeable land features of the Philippines.Apart from these, there are also caves, trenches, and coastlines.  The three biggest islands –Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao – are the three main islands of the Philippines where most of the population reside.  The land layout of the Philippines is very much filled with trees and wild life.  Man has found ways to enjoy the land formations in different ways such as mountain climbing, cliff jumping, bungee jumping, skydiving, dirt bike riding, big foot riding, rope rappelling, tree climbing, mountain tunnel sliding, race and relay vehicular and motorbike games, and cable car riding. The view from above these land treasures is impressive and breathtaking, and the sky seems so near with each wind blow.

In the areas of livelihood and business, the plains and fields provide the areas for agricultural possibilities. Farmers and genetic crop and animal engineers continuously look for the best means to produce food and raise livestock.  For land developers, they look for flat areas wherein they can build houses for them to sell and real estate people are having a heyday in the Philippines because there are a lot of people looking for property.  For the extremists, they can have their abode on the top of a cliff, side of a mountain, or on the surface of a beach.  The possibilities are endless.  It all depends on the creativity of the builder.

The land forms of the Philippines must be preserved and conserved if our children will still see the beauty of the Philippines.  Illegal logging and irresponsible mining practices have lead to the death of several wide area forests already.  Wild life is very much affected with the kaingin way of flattening wide expanse of flora and fauna.Businessmen and land developers are the common culprits in doing these destructive acts against nature’s land and soil resources.  The trees and plants serve as the food and habitat of the wild animals.  Without these, they would lose their homes, their food and die.  Land forms also contain different minerals, and miners have a fiesta gathering these important minerals and precious rocks.  The geography of the Philippines is really one of the Filipino’s national treasures and the call to take care of the land should be heard by the world.
