Where To Spend Your Spring Break

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Are you looking for affordable student vacations for your spring break this year? In the past, it seemed everyone partied in Cancun, Mexico or Panama City, Florida. These places will continue to soak up tourist dollars, yet there are many other hot locales that are budget-friendly for college students looking to have a good time and see the world beyond North America. Forget Hawaii and Australia: the best travel packages will take you to Madrid, Las Vegas and Buenos Aires.

Madrid vacations are rewarding for students who’ve had a hard semester that involved more libraries than wild parties. You’ll find many of the daily traditions appealing in Spain. For instance, there are afternoon “siestas,” where the cafes fill up with locals who need a break for lunch, conversation and resting. Later, after dinner, the Spanish like to stroll through the streets on evening “paseos” (walks). The heart of the city, Puerta Del Sol, is filled with diverse shops and world-renowned restaurants. While in town, you can visit the Prado Museum, the El Escorial Palace and the Museum of Natural Sciences. Madrid travel within the city is easy using the inexpensive and efficient metro line. Hostels can be found for as low as $19/night, which will help you meet other travelers and have the best spring break possible. Even though Madrid is 3 1/2 hours from the nearest beach, which is in Valencia, you will find much to do in this metropolitan playground.

One of the most inexpensive and popular spring break vacations is to Las Vegas, Nevada. The “City That Never Sleeps” is known for its midnight buffets, bottomless drinks and 24/7 gambling. Vegas is a place for older spring breakers who are of legal drinking age, but there is so much to do for students of all ages. Themed luxury hotels give you a little of everything — from the Romanesque Caesars Palace and the Venetian, to the glamorous New York New York and European Eiffel Tower. Walking through the casinos and hotel lobbies alone could easily keep you busy for a week, but you can also catch a number of free shows. The Mirage’s waterfalls and nightly volcano eruptions greet the frugal, while the high rollers pay to see Sigfried and Roy’s world-famous white tigers. You can also see pirates battling at Treasure Island, knights jousting at Excalibur and cowboys in a shoot-out at Sam’s Town. Remember, all Vegas hotels have free offerings along with your stay, so be sure to find out what perks you can get before making your final decision.

One last place to look for great travel deals and vacations is Buenos Aires, which is located in Argentina. There are a number of special spring break travel packages at www.toursgonewild.com, which will help you see and do everything in the short time that you’re there. Well, okay, maybe you can’t do everything… but you’ll see a number of famous attractions and participate in a great deal of diverse activities, at the very least! Buenos Aires packages start at ,749 and include round-trip airline tickets, hotel accommodations, nightclub entry with VIP/front-of-the-line access, transportation to and from the clubs, a half-day tour of the city, daily breakfast buffets, as well as all taxes and fees.

A Vacation To Be Remembered

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

A Madrid vacation is one of the most affordable trips you can take. Since so much of Spain’s wellbeing depends upon its vital tourist dollars, government plans and tourism incentives have been ramped up to entice foreigners with a few dollars to spend. Even if you feel you don’t have much money socked away in the bank, it’s hard to say “no” to a 9 round-trip flight from www.bt-store.com or pass up on a /night room at an exciting backpacker’s hostel. If hotels resorts are more your taste, you’ll be happy to know you can find a fully furnished Manhattan-style apartment for less than /night too! Here you’ll find some travel information to ensure you get the most from your trip.

Eating is a crucial component of any vacation and Madrid travel is no exception. The Spanish are known for their use of spices like saffron, pinchitos, paprika, bouillons and sea salt. They use some of the world’s best olive oil to cook their dishes and combine rice with meat and vegetables in sumptuous feasts. The Spaniards are also very good at using every part of an animal, much to the chagrin of visitors with sensitive stomachs. Those with adventurous palettes and strong stomachs may want to try local favorites like Oreja (pig’s ears) Callos a la Madrileña (tripe with beans), Sopa de Ajo (garlic soup), Bacalao a la Madrileña (salted cod in a sauce) or Rabo de Toro (stuffed cow or bull’s tail). Madrid novelties aside, you won’t want to leave the city centre without trying manchego cheese, manzanilla wine or croquetas and Madrid dipping oil.

Naturally, after eating all that rich food, you’ll need to walk around and see the sights of Madrid. At the ultra-modern Cosmo Caixa (science museum), you’ll catch a glimpse of how the Earth was created, how tornadoes work and play with interactive exhibits that will keep the kids busy for hours. Visit a zoo, an amusement park, a garden and a bullfighting school at Casa de Campo, which is the “Central Park” of Madrid. At Casa de América you will see stunning 19th century architecture and, the locals warn, you may even see a ghost! Capricho de la Alameda de Osuna is one of the most tranquil settings in bustling Madrid. As a hideout for Napoleon’s soldiers, these well-manicured gardens are fit for a duchess (the Duchess of Osuna, to be exact). Nuestra Señora de la Almudena is a neoclassical cathedral built in the 19th century, which tops many Madrid travel plan itineraries. Similarly, the art museum at Basílica de San Francisco el Grande cannot be missed.

Textiles and tourism are the two major industries of Madrid, Spain, so you’ll find lots to do and many items to buy on your Madrid vacation. Of course, there is still always a place for the frugal traveler, according to the author of www.dirtcheapmadrid.com, a blog that covers all the bargains you can find in the city centre. You can stay in a hostel or you can stay in luxury hotels. You can fine-dine and drink until your heart’s content or you could look for a “tasting” tour that numerous tapas bars and restaurants. You can pay full-price to see the museums at your leisure or you can schedule carefully to dash through during the free hours. Your Madrid travel plan can be anything you want it to be! For more information, visit the city’s official tourism site at www.esmadrid.com.

Things To Know When You Travel In Spain

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Madrid is an enchanting city that is both historic and modern. You’ll have all the amenities of any world-class metropolis — museums, theatre, art galleries, parks, excellent public transit, retail centers and restaurants, but you’ll also catch a glimpse of times past with ancient medieval cathedrals, Renaissance art exhibits, civil war monuments and centuries-old architecture. Many travelers choose to hook up with travel guides and city tours to help them navigate this maze of wonderment, which can cost as little as or thousands of dollars, depending on how much you want included in your ticket price.

It’s useful to have travel guides in the city, if for no other reason than to cart you around. Traffic in the city centre is unreal at times, with cars swerving, honking, parking and tailgating all over the place. While many museums, restaurants and monuments are within walking distance, you’ll miss out on the historic background, the colorful stories and the travel information that really brings this Spanish city to life. Your freedom might be somewhat hindered on a tour, but you will get an overview of many different places all in one day, so you’ll have a better idea where you’d like to spend more time once you’re back on your own again. A Madrid Vision city bus tour (www.madridvision.es) might take you to Royal Palace, the Paseo del Prado, the Puerta de Alcalá, down the historic Gran Via boulevard, through modern Salamanca and to the Paseo de la Castellana mansion for $14-$43/person.

Many travelers love the idea of adding travel guides to their all-inclusive vacation packages. Go Ahead Tours (www.goaheadtours.com) offer an 11-day vacation starting at ,079 (plus a - 5 government fee) that takes you to Lisbon, Seville and Madrid. The travel packages include round-trip transatlantic airline tickets, a multilingual tour director, licensed local city guides, nine nights accommodations in popular hotels, hotel service charges/baggage handling/taxes, daily hot buffet breakfasts, three-course dinners with wine or beer, deluxe motor-coach transportation, sightseeing tours and entrance fees to select sights.

Arriving in a new foreign city can be overwhelming. Where do you go? What should you do? How do you get there? How far apart are the city’s top attractions? The great thing about travel guides is that they give you a good idea of where everything is, so you will note where you want to spend more time during your extended stay. Whether you take a bus tour, a bike tour, a museum tour, a culinary tour or an out-of-town tour, you’ll be able to get the most from your stay in Spain by hooking up with seasoned travel professionals.

Becoming a diver (part 2)

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

I have been trying to become a qualified diving instructor and have spent the summer in Hurghada. My time there was fabulous and I met nice people, but I did not dive enough to qualify for a dream diving job. The good thing was that I receive some great advice and a route to move forward.

One thing that did surprise me was the cost of living during my stay in one of these Red Sea resorts. I has wildly miscalculated the cost, and had run out of money by the end of the third week in Egypt. Thankfully I managed to secure some bar work in one of the many luxury hotels. I also had some promotional work flogging Egypt holidays from within a small office, from which I was able to earn a little extra cash. At the end of my five week stay I had a great tan but had not moved that much closer to realising my ambition.

So it was goodbye to luxury Egypt and hello Brighton – the search for an organised diving professional course had begun. I had to look out for the PADI IDC professional diving qualification, which was the industry standard for the world. The PADI course (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) involves much more than diving experience and can be quite complex. As well as being good at life saving, you are expected to know about law, business, sales and marketing. Although this course exists in resorts such as Hurghada, it is generally oversubscribed so booking in advance is a good idea. Once qualified, you can find any IDC centre throughout the world and put yourself forward for an amazing job. The people interested in the diving instruction are like me, committed to taking their open water course.

As I progress through the course over the coming months, I will report on how things are going and whether my goals are still in sight.
