U S Passport Name Changes: The Relevant Procedures

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

If you have had your name legally changed, you will need to apply for a USA passport name change. The procedure for this will depend on several factors, including how long ago your current passport was issued. Depending on your situation, there may or may not be a fee and you may or may not be able to make your application by mail.

If the passport you currently hold was issued within the last 12 months, you can have the name changed free of charge as long as you can show legal proof of the change. In this case, you need to mail the application, current passport, and an original or certified copy of the court order or marriage certificate documenting the change of name. You will also need to supply two recent photos which are less than 6 months old.

When the current passport you hold in your prior name is more than one year old, you need to use a different form. This can also be mailed in as long as you have legal proof of the change in name. In this case, there is also a fee that must be sent along with your application. The proof of the change and the photos must be sent with this form as well.

If you are unable to supply legal proof of your change in name, you must make your application in person. This situation is treated similarly to applying for a new passport. You will be required to show at least three forms of public records which detail your assumed name along with your birth place and date. They must show use of the name for at least five years.

Children who are less than 16 years of age must also apply in person for their passports and provide the same documents. They must be accompanied by their parents or guardians as well who will need to show legal proof of their relationship. The general requirements for passports for minors should be reviewed so that you have all the necessary documentation when you arrive at the agency.

Keep in mind that it can take four to six weeks, or even up to ten, to receive your new passport. If you have a need for it sooner, it is best to request your new passport form to be expedited. In this case, you will also need to include the additional fee for this service. This service can be requested for any passport application.

Even when a passport is expedited, it can still take 2 to 3 weeks to get to you. If you are in an emergency situation in which you need the revised passport sooner, you may want to contact a passport expediting company to speed up the process.

If you are mailing your application for a U.S. passport name change, make sure that all your documentation is packaged securely. It is also best if you send it so that it can be traced. Rather than waiting until you have travel plans, do yourself a favor and send in the passport application as soon as you actually change your name.

Need To Conduct A U.S. Passport Name Change On Your Pasport

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Although it has become a bit more complicated to obtain a passport than it ever has been before, having changes made to your passport does not have to be a difficult or expensive process. New security measures at the boarders have been initiated over the last ten years that have somewhat complicated the passport process. These regulations have made some people hesitant to apply for simple changes to their passports, like a United States passport name change. These changes can be simple to make, however.

It is quite straightforward in most cases to apply for changes to your pasport and it is normally also quite affordable. Most of the common changes that people need to apply for do not even require a fee and only a short form is required to process the change. There are fees that are imposed for certain changes and to have these changes done in a speedy fashion there is also a small fee.

Quite commonly passports arrive with printing errors like misspellings or incorrect information. It is important to get these issues fixed as soon as possible, but these changes can be made any time during the valid dates on the passport.  The DS-5504 form is the form you will need to have to get these changes processed. This form can be picked up at a post office and dropped back off at one. You can also simply print it out online and mail it to the address on the form.

Another common change that people need is a name change. This is often needed if a marriage or divorce has taken place since the passport was issued. There is no fee for this change either unless expedited service is needed. The DS-5504 form must be used and it must be submitted one year or less after the passport was issued. This form can be easily printed out online and returned to your local post office. It can also be mailed to the address on the form.

If it has been more than one year since your passport was issued and you need a name change, there will be a small fee for the service. Expedited service will add $60 to this fee. The DS-82 form will be required for this sort of passport name change. You can fill this form out at the post office and pay the fees there or you can fill out the form and mail it with the fee included.

If additional Vista pages are needed to be added to your passport there is no fee and this change can be made anytime as long as your passport is valid. This is a free change in general, but if this change must be made fast the $60 expedited fee will be added. It does not matter how much time has passed since the passport was issued, but the passport must still be valid.

It costs about $120 to apply for and have a passport issued today. A passport can be processes quickly if the $60 fee for expedited service is paid. Another $60 may be added if the applicant cannot prove citizenship and the government must verify citizenship. These are relatively small fees, but they can add up if many unique services are needed.

Making simple changes to your passport can be quite easy and also inexpensive to do. Most changes can be made for free and only have fees if you need the request processed quickly. Making a change like a U.S. passport name change is actually a quite simple process. The process and related costs may have changes in recent years, but the process is actually still quite simple.

Prepare The Pasport Name Change Method Quick And Easy

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The reasons for changing your name are many. You may do this as a result of a marriage or divorce, and it may also be as a choice regarding a career. No matter what the reason for changing your name, you will want to change all of your legal documents as well. This includes changing your name on your passport. A United States passport name change is simple, but the process will vary depending on how long you have had your passport.

You are required by law to change your name on your legal documents at any point that you change your name. A pasport name change is necessary as well, as part of this process. When doing this you will need to verify with proper documentation that you have changed your name.

You do not, however, want to get rid of your old documents. You may need these at a later time, such as processing a license in another state if you relocate. Several states make it necessary to provide documentation of your previous name when applying for a license in that state.

A passport name change can occur different ways. The method that you select will be governed by the time it has been since you obtained your passport and whether you have legal documentation supporting your name change. The period of time that has transpired since you first filed for your passport will also determine whether you owe a fee for a passport name change.

If it has been less than a year since you first received your passport, you will not need to pay a fee and the application you need will be different than if you have had your passport for a longer period of time. The proper form in this case is the DS-5504 form.  This form will need to completely filled out and mailed in. You may also be required to provide two photos that are recent and meet passport specifications.

The DS-5504 will need to be mailed in along with your original passport and the other documentation. This form gets mailed to the National Passport Processing Office, PO. Box 90107, Philadelphia, PA, 19190-0107.  Verify that you have all necessary paperwork before submitting the application.

If you have had your passport in excess of a year, then you will need to handle your passport name change in a different manner. DS-82 is the correct form for this process.  This form will require a fee and also two recent and correctly sized color pictures. This form gets mailed to the address indicated on the application.

It is absolutely necessary that your documents be certified copies, not notarized photocopies. If they are not certified copies they will not be accepted and you will have to do the process over again. You may need to acquire your documents, such as your marriage certificate, before submitting the necessary paper work.

If you need your marriage certificate or divorce decree you can contact the record department for the county clerk of courts. Keep in mind that the pass port name change typically takes three to four weeks. You may attempt to speed this up by paying an expedite fee or contacting the office of your state Congressional representative if there is an immediate need for assistance.

Passport Name Change Application - It Is Not A Pain

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

If you are a passport holder who has recently changed your name because you either got married or because of a court order, then you’ll need to have a passport name change. This is the kind of procedure you need to go through so that your new name will be reflected on your passport. In this article, we’ll show you the options that you have to get a US passport name change.

Before you apply for a passport name change, you first need to verify when your passport was issued. That’s because the type of procedure you’ll follow will depend on the date of issuance of your passport. To verify the date, all you need to do is check your passport where your personal details are found.

If your passport application was issued within one year, then you will be required to submit the following documents: your current and valid passport, two recent color passport photos, and the legal document that shows your change of name. This will either be your marriage contract or a court order. What you will submit naturally depends on what’s applicable to you. Along with these requirements, you’ll also need to accomplish Form DS-5504. This is the form you fill in when applying for a passport name change.

Keep in mind that there are no fees to have your passport processed if it is less than a year old. However, there will be applicable fees should you decide to have the process expedited. Expediting your passport application can cut your waiting time from four to six weeks in routine processing to just two to three weeks. So if you need to have your passport sooner than later, then have your passport name change expedited.

Meanwhile, if your passport was issued more than a year ago, then you will submit a slightly different set of documents. In this procedure, you will submit: your current and valid passport, two recent color passport photos, documents that prove your name change (i.e. your marriage contract or a court order). These are basically the same documents you submit in the previous option.

However, instead of the DS-5504, you will submit form DS-82. This is the form that you use when applying for a passport application by mail. Also, you will need to pay the applicable fees to have your passport processed.

There are times when those applying for a passport name change don’t have the legal documents to prove it. If you’re in a similar situation, you’ll need to submit a different set of requirements: your current and valid passport, two recent color passport photos, the completed Form DS-11, and pay the applicable fees. In place of the legal document normally required, you will need to submit three public records with your date and place of birth and that indicates the exclusive use of your new name for at least five years. You will then have to submit these requirements in person once you accomplish them.

When applying for a us passport name change, the ones we discussed above are the options available to you. Once you have determined them, you’ll then know what kind of option you have to choose.
